Rotary Club of  Toronto West

Rotary Grace – O Lord we stand for every race, from every creed from every place; to give our thanks and say our grace for food, for health. May Peace embrace the world through Rotary.

Last Week – July 3, 2008

What better way to start the year than to roast the outgoing president.

Stephen Thiele was MC for the evening, and after calling on Ron Wayman to say grace we all sat down to an excellent meal.

When the meal was over MC Stephen called on Past president Brian to perform an induction ceremony for our newest member, Terry Donahue. Brian presented Terry with a certificate of membership and other very important Rotary literature before calling on President Nick to pin his Rotary lapel pin upon him. The best of wishes were offered to Terry by all of our members.

A certificate was then presented to Mike Walker and his wife Bette in recognition of the work that they have performed for our club. Due to their moving up to the Orangeville area, this was Mike’s last official visit as a member.

The next item on the agenda was to present the Earl LaBerge outstanding achievement award to the Rotarian who has done more than one would normally expect as a Rotarian in the past year. This year it was presented to Mark Dawber. A long round of applause followed the announcement.

It was now time for the Roast, and the first to be called upon was Ron Wayman. Ron spoke about when Brian was first asked to become president and how he accepted the challenge, and made the club better for it. Mention was also made of the change of the style of dress that has now been adopted for  our meetings.

The next to follow was Paul Collier, who’s first words were “Brian, we appreciate you. He then went on to give a little of Brian’s history with Rotary, going back to the days of the Etobicoke Sunrise club. Paul’s description of  Brian’s pedigree and the definition of his family name(s) left us all a little bewildered.

We heard about Brian’s particular work with the “Habitat for Humanity” program.

Paul went through a long list of achievements and sacrifices that Brian participated in. Special note was made of the Board of Directors meetings.

Current President Nick Galletto then followed telling us how, when 2 ½ years ago, after attending one of our musical nights, Stephen Thiele asked him if he would like to learn more about Rotary, and one thing led to another and he was in. Being elected to President followed the same pattern, with past president Brian wielding the big stick.

Stephen called upon President Nick to present past president Brian with the president’s gavel and plaque. President Nick then had the honour of pinning on Brian, his past presidents lapel pin.

The last item on the agenda was the handing over the silver goblets,  that first started in 1975, when Rotarian Bill Lange first presented a set of silver goblets to the club, requesting that each year, they be passed on to the incoming president, as a token of Rotary’s continuity, After filling the six goblets, a toast to Rotary was called and Past President Brian passed them on to President Nick to hold in his safe keeping for the coming year.

It’s Very True

”See, if you try to give people what you want to give them, it has no value to the people. You have to give people what they want. And that most   basic necessity has always been water. Provide them good clean drinking water and then you have won them over.

Spoke Joke

A teenage girl came downstairs dressed to go to the Mall in shorts and a spaghetti string top. Seeing her attire, her father objected, and a fight broke out.

Her mother stepped in and reminded her husband that when they were young she had dressed the same way.

“Yeah!” he said. “Well, if you remember right, I had something to say about that too!”

“Yes, dear,” she said, “you did. You asked me for my phone number!”
