Rotary’s current code of ethical conduct, The Four-Way Test, was developed during the Great Depression, by a US Rotarian, Herb Taylor, as ethical guidelines that helped him save a floundering business. The code, formally adopted by Rotary in 1943, simply states:
“Of all the things we think, say or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?”
The Four-Way Test has been translated into the languages of over 100 countries, and appears in unexpected places: on highway billboards, in schoolrooms, courtrooms and halls of government. It’s even on the moon, thanks to astronaut Buzz Aldrin planting a 4 Way Test pin on its surface!
Rotarians continue to take pride in using their professional stature and their knowledge to make things happen worldwide. During the month of January, Rotarians bring more focus to their roles as business leaders who foster ethical practices, build and reinforce business networks and use their vocational skills to and expertise to address community needs and mentor others.
If business ethics are important to you, please join us at a meeting to get to know some like-minded people. If you can't attend a meeting, please consider making a donation to support our efforts in the community.
