Rotary Club of Toronto West

Rotary Grace – O Lord, we stand for every race, for every creed from every place, to give our thanks and say our grace for food, for health. May peace embrace the world through Rotary.

Last Week – July 7, 2005

The first week of the New Year, and a chance to hear from our incoming president Stephen Thiele.

Stephen started off by telling us, not reminding us, how some things were 100 years ago in 1905. “Oh! for the good old days.”

He distributed some photographs that he took at the R.I. Convention, and spoke very highly of Chicago. While at the convention he attended some plenary sessions, District 7070 meeting, the president-elect luncheon, the House of Friendship, the Field Museum, and the membership workshop. He learnt of some membership issues such as only 11% of Rotarians worldwide are under the age of 40, and that less than 20% of the membership are women,

We also heard about a side of Rotary that is not well publicized, the Fellowship side, where Rotarians interested in a like hobby or interest ,

keep in touch with one another.

We then heard about some of the proposals that are being considered for a change of venue, to make our club finances more favourable.

President Stephen, then turned the podium over to Terry Vango, who outlined his plans for the groups of teams that will be responsible for the weekly speakers and programs, the manning of the table for attendance collection etc. and for setting up the room. A list was distributed to all those present, with four members each being responsible for one month. The first name of each group will be the team leader and will be responsible to see that everything runs smoothly. For further clarification, on any of these items, contact Terry.

We were told that the guest speaker should start speaking at about 8:15 a.m. and speak for about 15 to 20 minutes.

President Stephen then spoke at length about Community Service projects, headed up by Brian Hicks. We heard that during the past month, the club board passed three resolutions, the first was to support the Burnhamthorpe Community project, the second was to support the Hope Air Project, and the third was to designate the money that we now have in trust to a permanent fund , the interest from which will be used for community projects.

The general structure of Rotary clubs is being changed and we will be changing accordingly.

Spoke Joke:

A physician, an engineer, and a lawyer were discussing who among them belonged to the oldest of the three professions represented. The physician said. “Remember, on the sixth day God took a rib from Adam and fashioned Eve, making him the first surgeon. Therefore, medicine is the oldest profession.”

The engineer replied, “But, before that, God created the heavens and earth from chaos and confusion, and thus he was the first engineer. Therefore, engineering is an older profession than medicine.”

Then the lawyer spoke up. “Yes,” he said, “But who do you think created all the chaos and confusion?”

Duties for August

For the month of August, the following will be responsible for setting up the table, collecting the money, arranging for a guest speaker. And for tidying up after the meeting. They should be in attendance by 7:00 am: Bob Sexton, Albert Kezes David McKee and Mike Newediuk. Bob Sexton is the group leader.

R.I. has designated August as the month to highlight Membership development and the creation of new Rotary clubs.

The programs should reflect this theme.

Club Committees

Club committees are charged with carrying out the annual and long-range goals of the club based on the four Avenues of Service. When feasible, committee members should be appoint-ed to the same committee for three years to ensure consistency. Standing committees should be appointed as follows:

Membership. This committee should develop and implement a comprehensive plan for the recruitment and retention of members.

Club Administration. This committee should conduct activities associated with the effective operation of the club.

The Rotary Foundation. This committee should develop and implement plans to support The Rotary Foundation.
