Rotary Grace – O Lord we
stand for every race, from every creed from every place; to give our thanks and
say our grace for food, for health. May Peace embrace the world through Rotary.
Last
Week – December 2, 2010
We
met at Alex Family Restaurant to hold a business meeting.
Don
Foster led off the meeting by giving us an up-date on the sale of the Christmas
goodies. He regretted to say that he was sold out of the light sliced cakes and
that the supplier would not be making any more.
Susan
McCoy then gave us the final details of Christmas Party, which will be held on
Thursday December 16th at the Lakeshore Yacht Club. There will be no
morning meeting on that day.
Mark
gave us the financial statement saying that the Scotch Nosing event gave us a
return of about $2700.00, and that the clubs accounts were in a very good
position. Money is available to spend on our Rotary Exchange Student should
he/she be accepted, and we are looking into the possibility of giving more
dictionaries to a grade 3 or grade 4 class of students at some other schools.
Don
Foster then spoke again, this time on International, saying that we had donated
$3,000, and were working together with the Rotary Club of Alliston on building
a hospital in Uganda.
Willis
Rudy brought us up-to-date on some of the people that will be attending the
Rotary Youth Impact Awards Gala. We also heard that money from our corporate
sponsors now stood at $34,000.
He
was followed by Stephen Thiele who told us that he is expecting about 270 to
300 people in attendance. Tickets will be available very shortly. He said that
nominations were now all in, and that any extras will be carried over to next
year.
John
Stevenson reminded us all that we should notify him as soon as possible if we
have received any items for the Silent
Auction. Make sure that you use the web site for conveying your information,
and that you use the numbered labels to identify the item.
Ron
Manfield spoke on membership, saying how pleased he was that before the years
end we would be inducting 3 new members, and that he looked forward in
continuing this into the second half of the Rotary year.
President
Doug told us that those that didn’t receive it yet could pick up copies of “The
Rotarian” from the table at the back of the room.

Spoke
Joke
Walking
into a lawyer’s office, a man asked what his rates are.
“Fifty
dollars for three questions,” the lawyer stated.
“Isn’t
that awfully expensive?” the man asked.
“Yes.”
The lawyer replied. “What’s your third question?”
Polio
Eradication
As
the end draws near, Rotary and its partners in the effort to eradicate polio
have adopted an accelerated strategy.
This
is necessary to ensure that cases of polio occurring in this year will be the
last – keeping Rotary on track to celebrate a world certified free of polio. An
emphasis on stepping up work in troubled spots around the world has been deemed
essential for eradication, and the continued hard work of Rotarians is an
integral part of the plan.
The
World Health Organization (WHO) has identified 5 top-priority countries, which
are affected by conflict, (Afghanistan, Angola, the Democratic Republic of
Congo, Somalia and Sudan), five others have been considered “reservoirs”, -
countries in which eliminating polio has proved particularly difficult for various
reasons (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria and Pakistan.
The
plan includes high levels of routine immunization, more National Immunization
Days, surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis, and thorough follow-up
activities including house to house immunization in high risk areas. Increased
surveillance activities – required to validate eradication – are now
implemented.
AIDS
is the next major disease to help eradicate. Let’s all get busy.
