John Cochrane, founder of Cochrane Automotive in Etobicoke and long time club member, gave us a glimpse into the “connected car” of the future on August 18th. And the message was – it’s happening as we speak, and we’d better get ready for it!

Chips, Computers and Connectivity

New cars are now filled with computer chips that run the internal systems and provide entertainment. For example, in many new cars, your smartphone can connect wirelessly to the vehicle sound system via “Bluetooth”.   As well, onboard computers and connectivity can advise about traffic, keep the car in its lane and even prevent the car from colliding with the vehicle in front of it. Self-driving cars are already on the horizon and it won’t be long before they arrive on the general market scene!

Technology increases with every model year and before long these computers will, via the internet, talk to each other, to the vehicle manufacturer and others. This raises major issues of customer choice, privacy and the ability to use non-dealer repair and maintenance facilities. It also raises questions about data security and the ability of hackers to affect the behaviour of vehicles. “Imagine,” said John, “a hacker being able to stop every Ford F-150 pickup truck in North America at the same time!”

The connected car means big changes for auto repair shops, as the traditional “wrench mechanics” have to upgrade to effectively also become computer nerds. John says “Old service operators are done.” He is building his business to meet the challenge of the connected car.
